In AM, the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied in accordance with the audio signal, while in FM, the frequency of the carrier wave is varied. This fundamental difference in modulation technique leads to variations in signal quality, bandwidth, and range.

One of the most noticeable differences between AM and FM is the sound quality. AM signals tend to be noisier and have a lower fidelity compared to FM signals. This is because AM is more susceptible to interference from external sources, such as electrical noise and atmospheric disturbances. FM, on the other hand, offers a clearer and more stable sound quality, making it preferable for high-fidelity audio transmission.

Another significant difference is the bandwidth required for each modulation technique. AM signals require a wider bandwidth than FM signals. This means that AM can transmit fewer channels simultaneously compared to FM. For example, a standard AM radio station operates within a frequency range of 535 kHz to 1.7 MHz, allowing for approximately 1,000 channels. In contrast, FM radio stations typically operate within a frequency range of 88 MHz to 108 MHz, which allows for around 100 channels.

Range is another factor that sets AM and FM apart. AM signals have a longer range, which makes them suitable for long-distance broadcasting. This is due to the lower frequency of AM waves, which can travel further through the atmosphere. FM signals, however, have a shorter range, which is ideal for local broadcasting. This is because FM waves are more easily absorbed by buildings and other obstacles, limiting their range.

Furthermore, the sensitivity of AM and FM receivers also differs. AM receivers are generally more sensitive to weak signals, which can be advantageous in areas with poor reception. FM receivers, on the other hand, are less sensitive to weak signals but offer better sound quality and interference rejection.
